Wellstone July 1 Meeting

Our own John Stoller, Sacramento County Public Defender, will give us an update on criminal justice legislation and also discuss current local criminal justice wins, campaigns, and issues.  Come ready to ask your questions and learn about opportunities to get involved.

If you are ready for an In Person Action, We need lots of people to turn out for the SJUSD in person School Board Meeting where they will be discussing the important idea of increasing the size of the school Board so that ALL neighborhoods can be represented.

Toni Watkins, Deputy Organizing Director for the New Georgia Project, will discuss the recent victories and on-going attacks on voting rights in Georgia and what we can learn and do going forward.

This is a fundraiser for Wellstone and the proceeds will be used to support local progressive candidates.  Please donate and register today, and please be generous if you are able.

Joshua Cameron has recently stepped down as our Wellstone President.  The Executive Board of  Wellstone Democratic Club would like to acknowledge and thank him for his service to our club over the years and wish him well on his new endeavors.  We will be having an election at the upcoming April 1st meeting to fill our vacant positions.

THE PATH FORWARD

Now that Trump is out of office, the hard work begins. What will the future of the progressive movement in general, and Wellstone in particular, look like in the Biden era? We cannot know for certain but what we can know is what we expect out of our club and ourselves. Now is the time to reflect on the successes and setbacks of the past 4 years and think about the future.  

We need to hear from you, our members, about your expectations for the club in the years ahead. What do you think we should be focusing on? How should we go about it? These are questions only you can answer. We are dedicating our March program to answering these questions and using the answers to develop a path forward.

Wellstone is pleased to announce that Sacramento City Councilmember Katie Valenzuela will be the featured speaker at our Feb. 4 membership meeting. Valenzuela will be presenting for the People’s Budget Sacramento, an organization that promotes participatory budgeting (PB) for both the City and the County of Sacramento.

According to the Participatory Budgeting Initiative, PB is “a democratic process in which community members decide how to spend part of a public budget.” They further add that PB “gives people real power over real money.”

Our Guest speaker will be Assemblymember Kevin McCarty for Assembly District 7.  He has been re-elected with an resounding 74% of the vote and will be giving us an update on the work that lies ahead.  

We will also be having our 2021 Wellstone Board Elections.  Our work continues as well, and we encourage everyone to get involved.  If you want to make a difference, please consider getting involved!
