No August General Membershig meeting tonight.
Members are encouraged to attend the Sacramento County Office of Education Committee Hearing tonight at 6:30 regarding the SJUSD trustee district maps (see below) and make public comment.
See every one in September!
Join us this Thursday, August 5th, to tell the County Committee to delay approval of the San Juan Unified trustee area map until the map is updated with 2020 Census Data!
The San Juan Unified school district recently adopted a trustee area map and increased the board from 5 to 7. Now, the district has submitted these changes for approval to the County Committee with the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE). The County Committee will be holding a hearing on August 5th at 6:30 p.m. The agenda can be found HERE.
The district has rushed to complete this process and despite their efforts to get people out, they failed to get students and families out during the summer break. They also refused to wait for the 2020 census data and instead used 2010 data which does not take into account the many changes in our neighborhoods. We are encouraging county committee meeting and to share a public comment either in person or in writing. If in writing, you may submit your public comment HERE. To aid in your support of these efforts, we offer a sample public comment template below that can be read in-person or cut and pasted into the public comment form.
SAMPLE PUBLIC COMMENT
"Hello, my name is ___________________ and I am a parent/student/community member in the SJUSD. I urge the county committee to delay approving a trustee map until the school district uses 2020 census data. The district has squeezed this transition into a one month period, during the summer when school is out and at the expense of meaningful community engagement.
For example, one of our more vulnerable communities and schools in Arden-Arcade, Dyer-Kelly elementary school, only had five people attend a community meeting. Students and families must not suffer the consequences of the district's poor decisions. We need trustee areas that are drawn with updated census data and meaningfully engaged communities, especially those families from our most vulnerable communities. I urge you to delay approval of this map. Thank you."
Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can provide any additional information or support. Also, please share this email and the information about the Thursday meeting far and wide.
Thank you,
Magali
