August General Membership Meeting
Date Thursday, August 6, 2020
Time 7 - 9 PM
Place Virtual Zoom meeting - link to meeting will be sent out on Thursday
Prop 16 discussion: Repeal the ban on affirmative action
Opportunity for All coalition
Although we are socially distancing and unable to meet in person in order to keep our community safe, we are entering in to prime campaign season and everyone needs to be educated on the issues and the candidates. Our August Meeting is jam packed! First we will be discussing Proposition 16 which seeks to repeal Proposition 209 that was passed in 1996. Then we will have the opportunity to endorse 4 candidates running for local office:
Tami Nelson - Los Rios Community Trustee Area 7
Ali Moua - Elk Grove City Council District 1
Chris Yatooma - Los Rios Community Trustee Area 3
Siri Pulpipati - Rancho Cordova City Council
It takes time to be educated on the issues and candidates that we will be voting on, and we are trying to empower you with as much information as possible. Even if these candidates are not your representative, it is still important to know about their campaigns and what they stand for because every office has an impact on how our Region is governed.
Ballots will be emailed to current members after the meeting.
WE ARE NOW USING ELECTRONIC VOTING
We recently approved a Special Rule for if we ever need to endorse a Slate of candidates.
We also approved a Bylaw Amendment gives the Executive Board the authority to provide, as necessary, a mechanism for electronic voting between meetings - such as during a pandemic, when we cannot meet in-person.
The Bylaws are always available in the link in the header of our always-up-to-date Agenda, at this link: bit.ly/wpds-agenda
For the duration of the pandemic, simpler votes shall use Google Forms, and more complex votes shall use eBallot.
Membership dues and attendance requirements remain in place.
If you want to vote, you MUST be current on your dues BEFORE casting a vote, and you MUST have attended AT LEAST ONE MEETING in the last 12 months.
Each vote will be entirely done in one format.
On any voting item, everyone will be voting using the same method, to keep things fair and straightforward.
In a democracy, decisions are made by those who show up.
We are committed to making it as easy as possible for people to show up and participate.
We hope you join us in the future (even if it's virtual!).
